FOUNDATIONAL HAND CALLIGRAPHY

The Foundational hand is a simplified Roman form that was developed by English calligraphy revivalist, Edward Johnston. This hand is one of the most pleasing to write as one develops a rhythm with rounded entry and exit strokes. Many who teach lettering use this as an early model for their students because it is an extremely legible hand and also gives an understanding of the basic structure of many minuscule’s (lowercase)alphabets.

“Writing calligraphy is a practice of meditation. Not only are there mental benefits to practicing calligraphy, but physical benefits as well. Studies have found that the practice of calligraphic handwriting has the ability to decrease individuals' heart rates and increase their skin temperature.

Calligraphy has an extensive history spanning across ages and empires. Still a popular art form today, it has been linked to mental and physical health benefits similar to those experienced by people who practise meditation.
